This year, we celebrated our wedding anniversary in Koyna Maharashtra, a UNESCO World Heritage site nestled in the Western Ghats. The region is famous for the Koyna Dam, its abundant wildlife, and rich biodiversity. Although the monsoon is considered the best time to visit Koyna for its enchanting green landscapes, we visited in February and still enjoyed every bit of nature’s magic — misty mornings, dam views, and a symphony of birdcalls. The landscape was beyond words and stay at Club Mahindra Koyna luxurious.
Well-connected to major cities like Mumbai and Pune — approximately 290 km and 190 km away, respectively — we travelled by private vehicle. The journey was smooth and scenic, taking around six hours from Mumbai. The roads are mostly well-maintained, except for a few kilometers after Mangaon, where the construction work seems to be going on forever.
Before delving into the best places to visit in Koyna, let me share my review of the stay options. We stayed at two properties:

Location & Views – Forest vs Lake
MTDC Koyna Lake Resort wins hands down. Why? This place is dreamy. The view from the room is breathtaking — lake, hills, and greenery all combined in one perfect frame. I’ve rarely visited places that looked so wallpaper-worthy. Don’t believe me? Check out this pic of the rising sun. The five elements — the Panchamahabhuta — all seemed to be in perfect harmony. I could’ve gazed at this view forever. The resort is perched on a hill, overlooking the shimmering Koyna Lake and dam. What better way to recharge the soul?
Club Mahindra Koyna Maharashtra, on the other hand, is tucked into a forest and offers the signature Mahindra ambience, but the view from the room was underwhelming. However, I truly enjoyed walking through the dense forest in the evening and the misty silence at night. Still, in terms of the view from the room, MTDC is the clear winner.
Comfort & Room Experience
Comfy beds, spacious cozy rooms, hot water, power backups, and warm staff — the winner here is Club Mahindra Koyna. As expected from Club Mahindra property, luxury and comfort take center stage.
MTDC Koyna Lake Resort offers simple, clean, and comfortable rooms, but the washrooms could use some improvement. Small things like the absence of a doormat or a fan you can control stand out. That said, considering the price, it’s easy to overlook such minor inconveniences. And then, there’s that lake-view balcony — the ultimate scene-stealer.
Food – Luxury Dining or Local Delights?
If you’ve stayed at any Club Mahindra resort, you would know their food tends to be on the expensive side. The same was true here. The meals were fancy and pricey, but tasty — don’t miss the Murg Musallam and cheesecake here. We chose à la carte over the buffet. Since there are no restaurants nearby, and driving down the winding roads at night was not ideal, we mostly ate at the resort.
In contrast, MTDC’s food was simple, delicious, and affordable. Local dishes made with love — piping hot bhakris and chicken curry served fresh. A full meal for a family of four costs us under ₹1,000. Absolute value for money!
Verdict – Which Koyna Stay is Right for You?
If you want resort-style pampering, then Club Mahindra Koyna is your place. But if affordability is a priority, then MTDC is the better choice.
The Forest Escape Koyna Resort is forest-themed, which means the pathways inside the property are uneven. For elderly travelers, walking here — especially post-sunset — can be tricky. It wasn’t even monsoon season during our visit, and we still had to hold our seniors’ hand for safety. That said, the entire vibe was serene — it truly felt like we were living deep in the forest, away from the city’s noise.
MTDC Koyna, on the other hand, was a shorter stay, but the view will last us a lifetime. The property is also more accessible and walkable for elderly guests. To book your stay here, check their website. It is ideal to book in advance as MTDC resorts are usually full.
Both places are solid. We stayed one night at MTDC, followed by two nights at Club Mahindra. While the unbeatable lake views from MTDC took our breath away, Club Mahindra gave us memorable moments — games, luxury, and a fun karaoke night. A Club Mahindra vacation wouldn’t be complete without their evening shebang that invites you to sing and dance your heart out.
We also enjoyed the nature trail in the morning hours and a farm visit inside the property at Club Mahindra Koyna. Both the activities kept my little one busy and she enjoyed it a lot.
In the end, both are among the best places to stay in Koyna, Maharashtra — it just depends on your budget and the availability of Club Mahindra days.
