What makes Mahabaleshwar synonymous with strawberries is the climate that makes strawberry farming favorable in this region. For strawberries to bloom, it requires a cool and dry climate, as the fruit thrives in temperatures between 18 and 25 degrees Celsius. As Panchgani and Mahabaleshwar have favorable climatic conditions, unlike most of India where it’s hot & humid, approx. 5000 hectares of land here is cultivated with strawberries.

When to visit Mahabaleshwar?

If you are traveling to Mahabaleshwar to experience the strawberry season, then the best time to visit is between December & February. We visited towards the end of February and could pick the strawberries and enjoy the strawberry festival too, usually hosted in this region between March and April. The mornings were cool and since the farm was neighboring our resort, we visited early to enjoy the experience while the climate was good.

Our experience of strawberry picking at Green Valley Farm Mahabaleshwar

Green Valley Strawberry Farm Mahabaleshwar located near Club Mahindra Sherwood resort is a picturesque farm, almost like a painting, standing quietly amidst the hills. The narrow pathway leading to the farm is not well-maintained, but you can take your car to the farm, albeit at a slow speed.

The resort host was welcoming, and the farm was huge featuring strawberries and exotic vegetables. Here, you will find lettuce, purple cabbage, parsley, kale, Iceberg lettuce, brussels sprout, basil, turnip, etc. At the entry itself, there is a counter to collect the basket – Rs. 100 per basket. There is just one rule you need to remember – you must buy all the strawberries that you pick. Since our group included kids, they were elated running around the well-maintained farm picking up strawberries.

Green Valley Farm Mahabaleshwar Cost

They sell strawberries at a little high rate, i.e., Rs. 270 per kilo as compared to what the local vendors were selling, i.e., around 170 a kg. After a brief discussion, the host informed us that these strawberries are naturally grown. We understood the ‘organic’ label always demands a high rate.

Nevertheless, taking two baskets we entered the organized farm and our kids started picking strawberries. Of course, the host helped them at the start how to identify the best ones.

Few tips that can help you pick strawberries like a pro:

  • Pick firm and red strawberries.
  • Use the scissor provided along with the basket to cut the strawberry.
  • Don’t fixate on the size, it does not affect the sweetness.
  • Lastly, be mindful of your steps, do not step on the plant as they are fragile.
