8 Best Hill Stations in India

Shimla: The Queen of Hills

  • Location: Himachal Pradesh
  • Best Time to Visit: September to December for winter charm

Shimla, a quaint hill station in Himachal Pradesh, is a dream destination with its colonial charm and snow-capped peaks. For fans of the Tamasha movie, this is a must-visit place to rediscover oneself. The surroundings are serene — perfect for quiet strolls around the mountains and relaxed sightseeing.

What makes Shimla special is that it doesn’t rely on a long list of tourist spots — the entire hill station is a delight to explore on foot. The small lanes, narrow alleys, and timeless charm described by Ruskin Bond are best experienced raw and unhurried.

From September to November, the weather is pleasantly cool, while December brings a true winter experience, which might feel harsh for those not used to the cold. The best places to visit in Shimla include Mall Road, Jakhoo Temple, Kufri, and Chail.

During our trip, we stayed at Chail Palace, and the experience was indescribable — a private chalet so cut off from the outside world that we barely had network, yet we enjoyed every moment of that peaceful disconnect.

Manali: The Romantic Getaway

  • Location: Himachal Pradesh
  • Best Time to Visit: October to December

Manali is truly synonymous with a romantic getaway, where every lane, every café, and every scenic corner seems to celebrate love. It was my honeymoon destination too, and every visit brings back memories of its magical charm.

Known for its breathtaking scenery and adventure sports, Manali is perfect for a winter vacation. For adventure enthusiasts, there’s a galore of activities — from paragliding and skiing in Solang Valley to river rafting along the Beas River — each offering an unforgettable experience.

During winter, the town transforms into a snow-covered paradise, making it ideal for family holidays and romantic escapes. Though more commercial and crowded than Shimla, there are plenty of places to visit in Manali. Don’t miss the Hadimba Devi Temple, Solang Valley for thrilling snow activities, and Rohtang Pass for its stunning mountain views.

Nainital: A Picture-Perfect Lake Town

  • Location: Uttarakhand
  • Best Time to Visit: October to February for winter charm

Nainital is a picturesque hill station known for its beautiful lakes and panoramic mountain views. Although it’s a popular summer retreat, visiting Nainital in winter offers a completely different charm — cool misty mornings, serene walks, and even a chance to witness snowfall around late December or early January.

For breathtaking views, take the ropeway to Snow Viewpoint and soak in the panoramic vistas of the hills. Families with children will also find plenty of fun activities in Nainital, making it an ideal destination for a memorable winter trip.

Mussoorie: The Queen of the Hills

  • Location: Uttarakhand
  • Best Time to Visit: October to December

Mussoorie, aka the “Queen of the Hills,” is one of my absolute favorite hill stations in India. I am so much in love with this quaint town that my first Novella is based on this city. This enchanting hill station blends scenic beauty with British colonial architecture.

Mussoorie sightseeing is incomplete without visiting Kempty Falls, Camel’s Back Road, and Gun Hill Point. Don’t miss Landour, a serene cantonment area that retains its old-world colonial charm. If you’re a fan of Ruskin Bond, a day trip to Landour is a mustand make sure to explore it on foot. Strolling and whiling away time as slowly as possible.

Munnar: The Tea Garden Hills of Kerala

  • Location: Kerala
  • Best Time to Visit: September to January for misty mornings and pleasant weather

Munnar is a charming hill station in Kerala, best known for its lush tea plantations and tranquil surroundings. We visited Munnar in September, and it was as dreamy as it gets — light rain showers, cool breezes, and mist-covered valleys made it feel straight out of a Bollywood film.

Nestled in the Western Ghats, Munnar offers scenic beauty and several trekking opportunities for nature lovers. Must-visit attractions include the vast tea estates, Eravikulam National Park, and the Mattupetty Dam. If you visit around the Onam festival, you can witness the region’s cultural celebrations in full swing. And yes — don’t miss the elephant ride, a delightful experience that adds to Munnar’s charm.

Ooty: A Colonial Charm in the Nilgiris

  • Location: Tamil Nadu
  • Best Time to Visit: October to December

Ooty, located in the heart of the Nilgiri Hills, offers an idyllic setting with its colonial architecture and picturesque lakes. Often referred to as India’s Switzerland, there are plenty of places to visit in Ooty. Must visit ones include Dodabetta Peak, Tea Factory, Government Botanical Garden, Pine Tree Forests, Pykara Waterfalls and Ooty Boat House. The best way to explore this charming town is on foot — every turn and every lane has a story to tell. The quiet you experience here truly touches your soul.

My personal favourite is the Pine Tree Forest, a magical spot I simply can’t get out of my mind. The mist drifting through the tall pines, the earthy scent of the woods, and the sheer calm make it a place you’ll want to return to again and again. This is one of the most popular hill stations in India as far as Bollywood movies are concerned. Many are filmed here and in fact many actors have a home here, famous being Mithun Chakraborty’s bungalow.

Coorg: The Scotland of India

  • Location: Karnataka
  • Best Time to Visit: October to December

Coorg, famously known as the “Scotland of India,” is one of the most popular hill stations in India situated in South India. The Coorg weather is at its best between October and March, making it a perfect time to soak in its misty mornings and lush green hills. Known for its coffee plantations, rolling landscapes, and rich Kodava culture, Coorg is an ideal winter destination for anyone looking to relax and reconnect with nature.

Some of the must-visit places in Coorg include the Dubare Elephant Camp, Abbey Falls, and Namdroling Monastery (also known as the Golden Temple). Don’t miss trying the locally made wines — their flavor and texture are simply exquisite. For me, Coorg is one of those rare places where you feel like settling down. The warm hospitality of the locals, the slow pace of life, and the serene beauty make it the perfect spot to unwind — or even imagine spending your retirement surrounded by nature’s calm.

Darjeeling: The Land of Tea Gardens and Toy Trains

  • Location: West Bengal
