Top Places to Visit in Koyna – A Complete Travel Guide
As promised in my last post, “Club Mahindra Koyna vs MTDC Lake Resort – Honest Stay Review,” I’m sharing a comprehensive Koyna travel guide to the top places to visit in Koyna — perfect for couples, families, or solo travellers looking to unplug and recharge in one of Maharashtra’s hidden gems. In this blog, I’ll take you through the best things to do in Koyna that let you experience the breathtaking beauty of Koyna and its surroundings.

Where is Koyna and Why is it Special?
Koyna, located in the Satara district along the Western Ghats — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — is known for its biodiversity and ecological richness. Often referred to as the “Mini Mahabaleshwar,” I actually found Koyna to be quieter, less commercialized, and far more serene. But then, we visited in February, whereas the best time to explore the Koyna Wildlife Sanctuary is during the monsoon.
5 Top Places to Visit in Koyna, Maharashtra
Here’s my curated list of top places to visit in Koyna — based on our trip and local recommendations:
-
Koyna Dam Viewpoint
📍 6 km from MTDC Resort
Located close to MTDC, we visited this spot as part of a tourist bus tour while staying at Club Mahindra. The Koyna Dam is one of the largest in Maharashtra and is often considered the lifeline of the state’s power and water supply. While the dam itself is not open to the public, the nearby viewpoint offers breathtaking scenes.

Our guide showed us a video of the dam lit up on 15th August — it was absolutely mesmerizing.
Travel Tip: Visit early in the morning or at sunset for magical lighting. If you’re lucky and it’s misty, the view becomes otherworldly.
-
Ozare Waterfall (Ozarde Backwaters)
📍 Approx. 15 km from Koynanagar
I have heard Ozarde Waterfall is tall, thunderous, and surrounded by lush green cliffs during the monsoons. Since we visited in February, instead of the waterfall, our tour included the serene backwaters — and they were splendid. We stopped here for evening tea, enjoying our warm beverages in the wild wind, feet soaked in the water. A must-visit place in Koyna!

Note: If you plan to trek to the waterfall during the monsoon, wear proper footwear — the trail can get slippery. Bring a flask of chai, and you’ve got yourself a dreamy break spot.
-
Nehru Garden
📍 Near Koyna Dam
Nehru Garden Koyna is a peaceful eco-park overlooking the dam backwaters. It’s a huge garden with colourful flowers, walking paths, and a peaceful corner that offers a beautiful dam view. Do visit if you are traveling with kids.

For adults, it is the perfect pace to enjoy slow nature walks. There’s also a small museum at the end of the trail, sharing the history behind the building of the Koyna Dam — truly awe-inspiring.

Bonus: There’s a small children’s play area and benches for soaking in the view.
-
Dimba Point – The Hidden Spot
📍 About 8 km from Koynanagar
On our way to Ozarde Waterfall, we stopped at this postcard-perfect viewpoint overlooking the valley, river, and the huge expanse of forest. From above, the landscape looks like the map of India — from south to north! This is a lesser-known gem, one of the hidden spots near the Koyna dam, but thankfully, our guide brought us here.

Travel Tip: There’s no signage or fencing — park safely and tread carefully near the edge.
-
Koyna Wildlife Sanctuary
Though this sanctuary is a designated tiger reserve under Project Tiger, we decided to skip it due to our short trip and past experiences of not spotting any wildlife in other sanctuaries. However, it remains one of the most popular places to visit in Koyna and is worth exploring if you have more time or are visiting in the right season. The best time to visit Koyna Wildlife Sanctuary is between June and September.
Is Koyna worth visiting?
Absolutely. it is a peaceful destination that offers both popular tourist spots and quiet corners few know about. Koynanagar tourist spots aren’t about crowded sightseeing; it’s about soaking in untouched nature — at your own pace. From watching the sunrise from our MTDC balcony to walking foggy forest trails near Club Mahindra, Koyna truly left an imprint on our souls.

The tree-lined roads in winter felt like something out of a foreign land. Being so close to Mumbai, these scenic drives near Satara have stolen my heart — and I hope to revisit during the monsoons next time! Definitely a good spot for quiet weekend getaways in Maharashtra during the long weekends. Hopefully, this blog will help you plan your Koyna weekend itinerary.

I have also shared my full review on the Club Mahindra Koyna, a forest resort near Koyna Wildlife Sanctuary. We had booked a one-day tour from Club Mahindra resort which covered all these spots and culminated with the sunset view point.
